Twelve individuals are facing charges of manslaughter in connection with the tragic case of a football supporter who sustained severe brain injuries during an assault after a match in 2015 and passed away five years later.
Simon Dobbin, a devoted Cambridge United fan, was attacked in Southend, Essex, following a match against Southend United in March 2015. Despite receiving round-the-clock care from his family in Mildenhall, Suffolk, the former RAF serviceman succumbed to his injuries in October 2020 at the age of 48.
The incident occurred outside the Railway Tavern pub in Southend, where violence erupted post-match. Mr. Dobbin, who was employed as a transport manager for a fuel company at the time, required constant care due to the severity of his injuries until his passing.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, Rebecca Mundy, announced the decision to prosecute the 12 individuals for manslaughter, stating that the evidence gathered by Essex Police in collaboration with the Complex Casework Unit supported the charges being brought forward in the interest of justice.
Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings of Essex Police commended the extensive investigative efforts that led to the charges, emphasizing the complexity and dedication required to reach this stage. He urged caution in public commentary to ensure a fair trial for the accused and expressed gratitude to Mr. Dobbin’s family for their enduring support.
The 12 accused individuals are scheduled to appear before Colchester Magistrates’ Court on March 31 for legal proceedings.
