A schoolgirl described as ‘incredibly talented’ tragically ended her life by suicide, concealing her mental health struggles from family and therapists, an inquest revealed. Laura Louise Spreadbury, aged 12, was found unconscious in the bathroom of her residence in Great Sankey, Warrington, following a day out with her father, younger sister, and a friend on June 29 last year. Despite immediate first aid efforts by her father, John Spreadbury, she was pronounced dead at Warrington Hospital at 9:04 pm.

The coroner, Victoria Davies, determined Laura deliberately took her own life due to her guarded nature and concealment of true feelings, despite experiencing mental health challenges for the past two years. Laura, a former player for Crosfields ARLFC and a Scout leader, was described as a high achiever and a supportive friend by her father.

Her father recounted a pattern of self-harm, denial, intervention by her parents, temporary cessation of the behavior, and eventual recurrence. Laura had disclosed suicidal thoughts to her doctor in March 2025, leading to a referral to a mental health service where she received cognitive behavioral therapy.

Following the inquest, St Gregory’s High School and Warrington Council expressed deep sorrow over Laura’s loss, highlighting her popularity, sense of humor, sporting prowess, and potential as a future head pupil.
