“2025 Sunday Times Young Writer Award: Bold Creativity Unveiled”

Published on

The spirit of British and Irish literary creativity is thriving in the hands of bold innovators. The unveiling of the shortlist for the 2025 Sunday Times Charlotte Aitken Young Writer of the Year Award serves as a powerful statement that the upcoming generation is actively engaged in dismantling societal and political barriers rather than being consumed by digital distractions.

For more than three decades, this prestigious award has been a pivotal platform for identifying influential voices that shape our cultural landscape, with notable past winners like Zadie Smith, Sarah Waters, and Caryl Phillips.

The tradition of recognizing outstanding talent continues with a current shortlist characterized by its profound empathy and unwavering commitment to confronting the harsh realities of our world.

Johanna Thomas-Corr, the lead literary critic for The Times and Sunday Times and head of the 2025 judging panel, lauded the nominated works as boldly outward-looking and deeply invested in exploring societal dynamics and our interconnected responsibilities.

This sentiment was echoed by a distinguished panel of judges comprising influential figures like Caleb Femi, Esther Freud, Graham Norton, Sathnam Sanghera, and Lea Ypi. Their choices emphasize narratives that foster unity, challenge norms, and counter the digital age’s tendencies towards isolation.

The four contenders competing for the £10,000 award bring unique perspectives to the forefront. Ben Brooks presents “The Greatest Possible Good,” a comedic family saga that probes the essence of goodness in a chaotic contemporary world.

Gurnaik Johal’s debut novel, “Saraswati,” embarks readers on a global odyssey as a protagonist uncovers a lost river in Northern India, unveiling the common threads that bind us across borders.

Additionally, the enigmatic author Liadan Ní Chuinn delivers “Every One Still Here,” a poignant collection of short stories delving into the enduring scars of post-conflict Northern Ireland. By opting for anonymity, Ní Chuinn allows the weight of history to resonate louder than individual identities.

The most audacious entry, “Year of the Rat” by Harry Shukman, offers a gripping piece of investigative non-fiction recounting his undercover experiences infiltrating extremist groups in the UK, a crucial narrative in an era marked by increasing radicalism.

The winner will be unveiled at the Barbican Centre on Monday, 23rd March, during a panel chaired by Booker Prize recipient and advocate for marginalized voices, Bernardine Evaristo, in an effort to ensure these impactful stories reach the audiences that need them the most through the Young Barbican program.

The climactic award ceremony will take place the following evening, Tuesday, 24th March, at the Whitechapel Gallery, where one of these courageous authors will be crowned, cementing their position among a lineage of distinguished literary figures.
