“£39.5M Fraud Probe: PM Law Clients Stranded”

Published on

A major investigation is underway regarding a suspected fraud amounting to £39.5 million, affecting numerous individuals, as per a regulatory announcement. PM Law Ltd, headquartered in Sheffield with 25 branches across the UK, is under scrutiny for an intricate fraud scheme that involved the improper handling and misappropriation of millions of pounds belonging to clients.

Former clients have reported instances where their funds disappeared while they were in the process of property transactions, leading to potential risks such as failed moves and deposit losses due to the abrupt closure of the firm’s branches in Yorkshire, Cumbria, Berkshire, Derbyshire, and London on February 2nd, resulting in layoffs and disruption to tens of thousands of cases.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority, intervening post-closure, disclosed that claims exceeding £21 million have been submitted to its compensation fund. One affected individual, Amy-Jade Hughes, shared her distressing experience of the firm’s collapse just as she was on the brink of relocating to Australia with her family, facing financial liabilities due to the firm’s failure to settle her mortgage despite completing her property sale.

Similarly, Ellie Vaughan and William Mann found themselves in a predicament after the firm’s closure during their remortgaging process, leading to dual mortgage obligations on their Coventry property. PM Law, a group comprising 11 entities and over 30 trading names like Proddow Mackay and Butterworths Solicitors, specialized in various legal services and employed a substantial workforce.

Paul Hastings, the SRA Director of Client Protection, emphasized the ongoing efforts to assist former clients of PM Law, particularly in recovering their funds and documents to alleviate the challenges faced during property transactions and estate matters amid the firm’s sudden closure, aiming to provide essential support during a turbulent period for those affected by the situation.
