A 97-year-old grandmother is on course to break her own Guinness World Record as the oldest female wing walker. Betty Bromage, an adventurous soul from Cheltenham, Gloucs, embarked on this extreme sport at the age of 87 and achieved her first global record when she was 93. Scheduled for August, her upcoming sixth wing walk will likely secure her title once again.

Betty, residing in a retirement home, recalled being inspired by a Crunchie bar advert featuring a woman on top of a plane many years ago. Her decision to try wing walking came to her at 87 when she realized she had free time living in a retirement community. Initially finding a simple wing walk boring, Betty requested the pilot to perform more daring maneuvers, leading to exhilarating experiences.

Since her first wing walk in 2016 after her husband’s passing, Betty has completed multiple wing walks, including one on her 90th birthday amidst the Covid pandemic. Additionally, she has tackled various thrilling challenges like Europe’s longest zip line in Snowdonia and abseiling down Cheltenham’s Eagle Star building. In 2022, at 93, Betty clinched the Guinness World Record by performing stunts like a loop-the-loop and a barrel roll for charity.

Despite a recent stroke, Betty remains resolute to resume wing walking this summer. Her upcoming flight on August 4 at RFC Rendcomb Airfield will mark her sixth wing walk, with the goal of fundraising for the stroke unit at Cheltenham General Hospital. The CEO of Pegasus Homes, overseeing Betty’s care home, commended her as an inspirational individual proving that age should not limit new adventures in later life. The entire community eagerly anticipates supporting Betty in her next record-breaking feat.
