Millions of individuals born in the early 1970s are facing a potential delay of two years in accessing their private retirement funds. The current minimum age to withdraw money from a defined contribution pension is 55, known as the normal minimum pension age (NMPA).

Starting from April 6, 2028, the NMPA will be increased to 57, affecting individuals aged 55 or 56 during this transition period. Those born between April 6, 1971, and April 5, 1973, fall within this bracket.

PensionBee, a pensions app, highlights a crucial timeframe for this group. They have until April 2028, after turning 55, to tap into their pensions, including the option of taking lump sum payments. The initial 25% withdrawal is tax-free, capped at £268,275.

Maike Currie, the vice president of personal finance at PensionBee, noted that this change could catch some savers off guard. It is essential for individuals in the specific age range to be aware of the approaching deadline to access their pension funds before potentially being locked out for an additional two years.

While accessing pension funds early may be tempting, it is crucial to remember that these savings are designed to secure financial stability during retirement. Scammers may try to exploit these changes, so vigilance is advised to protect against fraudulent schemes.

The rise in the NMPA aligns with the ongoing increase in the state pension age, projected to reach 67 by 2028 after recent adjustments from 65 for men and 60 for women to 66 for both genders.
