“Study: Vitamin D Supplements Ineffective for Preventing Falls & Fractures”

Published on

Vitamin D supplements have been found ineffective in preventing falls and fractures among older individuals as per a recent scientific evaluation.

To maintain bone health, the NHS advises individuals in the UK to take vitamin D supplements during autumn and winter when sunlight exposure is limited, hindering natural vitamin D synthesis in the body.

A comprehensive review of 69 clinical trials involving 153,902 participants, published in the British Medical Journal, revealed that vitamin D or calcium supplements showed minimal impact on fracture risk. The researchers concluded that routine use of vitamin D supplements does not seem beneficial in preventing fractures and falls.

Experts have raised concerns about the efficacy of vitamin supplements compared to obtaining nutrients from food sources due to varying dosage levels that could either be insufficient or excessive, posing risks to individuals.

The research team from Quebec, Canada highlighted that a significant percentage of older adults, particularly those in nursing homes, experience falls leading to fractures annually. Despite the belief that calcium and vitamin D supplementation could offer a cost-effective solution, the study results did not support this notion.

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body, essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to bone-related issues like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

The review indicated that supplementation with vitamin D, calcium, or a combination of both did not demonstrate significant effects on specific fractures, such as hip fractures, or overall fall prevention, although there may be exceptions for individuals with specific bone disorders or osteoporosis.

Experts suggested that engaging in exercises like resistance training could improve muscle and bone health, while conducting home hazard assessments could help prevent falls more effectively than relying solely on supplementation.

Olivier Massé, a pharmacy expert from CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal in Canada, emphasized the need to redirect efforts and resources towards proven interventions instead of relying on supplementation for preventing fractures and falls.

Furthermore, researchers cautioned that individuals opting for vitamin supplements might generally lead healthier lifestyles with better dietary habits, potentially skewing previous observational studies that suggested a preventive role of vitamin D pills in falls and fractures.

Although the body naturally produces vitamin D through sunlight exposure, the limited sunlight during October to early March in the UK prompts the need for supplementation. However, vitamin D can also be obtained from select food sources.

For adequate calcium intake, the NHS recommends a balanced diet rich in dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods. Adults of all ages require 700mg of calcium daily for optimal bone health.

In cases where supplementation is necessary, healthcare providers often prescribe combined Calcium and Vitamin D tablets to support bone health and prevent conditions like osteoporosis.
