A man caused the death of his friend by driving recklessly at 76mph in a residential area, resulting in a fatal crash that claimed the life of his passenger. The incident occurred on Wolstanton High Street in Staffordshire when the driver, David Barker, lost control of his Skoda Octavia, causing it to flip. The victim, Steven Field, was ejected from the vehicle through the sunroof, sustaining fatal injuries.

Steven Field was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple injuries. Barker, who initially fled but later turned himself in, has been sentenced to seven years and four months in prison by Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. The fatal crash occurred after a night out where Barker, Steven, and another individual visited pubs before returning to the car in the early hours of the morning.

Barker’s dangerous driving was evident as he sped through the area, ultimately leading to the fatal crash. Despite expressing genuine remorse and taking responsibility for his actions, Barker admitted guilt to causing death by dangerous driving. The court heard that Barker’s excessive speed and reckless driving were the primary factors in Steven Field’s tragic death.

Judge Graeme Smith described the incident as a ‘tragedy’ and emphasized the severity of Barker’s actions in driving significantly above the speed limit. Barker was sentenced to serve two-thirds of his prison term and was also banned from driving for nearly ten years. He must undergo an extended retest before being allowed to drive again.
