“UK Heatwave: Is Sleeping with a Fan On Safe?”

Published on

The UK is set to experience a heatwave this week, with the upcoming Bank Holiday potentially marking the hottest day of the year as temperatures may reach 30C.

As the city and much of the nation brace for a prolonged period of warm weather, the age-old question resurfaces – is it advisable to leave a fan running overnight? To address this query, six health experts were consulted to determine whether it is better to have the fan on or off, and they all reached a similar conclusion, as per the Liverpool Echo report.

The consensus among the experts is that running a fan can enhance the sleeping environment by providing relief from the heat. Dr. Luke Powles, Clinical Director at Bupa Health Clinics, mentioned that if sleeping with a fan on all night offers comfort, it is acceptable to do so. However, some individuals might experience dry skin, nose irritation, or aggravated allergies from prolonged fan use. In such cases, experts recommend avoiding direct airflow towards the body, using oscillate mode, or limiting fan usage to shorter periods.

Chris Tattersall, the managing director of Woolroom, emphasized the importance of airflow in the bedroom during a heatwave, suggesting that using a fan, whether desk or ceiling, can help maintain a steady airflow for better sleep quality. Adjusting a ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise at high speed can effectively circulate air while sleeping, maintaining an ideal bedroom temperature of around 18 degrees.

Superdrug’s Pharmacy Director Craig Watt supported the idea of keeping the fan running for comfort during a heatwave but warned about potential side effects like dryness in the nose, throat, or eyes. He recommended staying hydrated and using products such as saline spray to alleviate any dryness caused by continuous airflow.

James Wilson, The Sleep Geek at Bensons, endorsed the use of a cooling fan in the bedroom to enhance comfort during hot nights. He advised positioning the fan strategically to avoid direct airflow, ensuring a cooler sleep environment without causing discomfort.

Dr. Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy highlighted the benefits of using a fan overnight to create a wind-chill effect, aiding in cooling the body through sweat evaporation. Placing a bowl of ice in front of the fan can further enhance the cooling effect in the room.

Matt Ladell, a cooling expert from Duux, recommended using a fan to cool the room before sleeping rather than leaving it on all night. Positioning the fan away from direct contact with the body or using it near an open window can help circulate air gently for better comfort.

NHS GP Dr. Punam Krishan, supported by Stannah, explained that a fan’s function is not to lower room temperature but to facilitate heat loss through improved sweat evaporation. While beneficial for comfort during warm weather, additional cooling measures might be necessary in extreme heat situations.

Although using a fan overnight is generally safe, individuals should consider essential precautions. The NHS advises against excessive dehydration from fan use and recommends maintaining a suitable distance, avoiding direct airflow towards the body, and staying hydrated. Allergy sufferers should be cautious, as fans can circulate allergens, and prolonged exposure to airflow can lead to skin dryness.
