“UK Heatwave: Bank Holiday Monday to Hit Record 35C”

Published on

Britons are enjoying an extraordinary heatwave, with Bank Holiday Monday set to reach a scorching 35C – the highest temperature ever recorded in May. The UK experienced its hottest day in 74 years on Sunday, hitting 30.9C at Kew Gardens. Meteorologists are forecasting even higher temperatures for Monday, possibly breaking records.

The current May temperature record stands at 32.8C, set in 1944 at Regent’s Park, Horsham, and Tunbridge Wells. However, experts predict that areas including Greater London and up to Cambridge could see temperatures soar to 35C on Monday, surpassing the milder 29C in Barbados.

The Met Office confirmed that eight parts of England had officially entered a heatwave on Sunday, starting with Heathrow at 30C, followed by other locations like Benson, Brooms Barn, High Beech, Kew Gardens, Northolt, Santon Downham, and Writtle.

Meteorologists point out that heatwaves are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The spokesperson for the Met Office mentioned that temperatures nearing 35C in May are historically significant, with overnight temperatures also expected to break records, remaining above 20C and causing discomfort for sleeping.

To classify as a heatwave in the UK, a location must experience at least three consecutive days of maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave threshold. The threshold varies across different UK counties.

The scorching temperatures led the MCC, owners of Lord’s cricket ground, to relax their dress code rules, allowing gentlemen in the pavilion to forgo jackets during Vitality Blast matches on Sunday. Drinks breaks were also implemented in Premier League games and the Championship playoff finals.

Forecasters anticipate record-breaking May temperatures in the coming days, with widespread sunshine across England and Wales. The Met Office Deputy Chief forecaster expects temperatures to peak on Monday, potentially breaking the existing UK temperature records for May and Spring.

Sky’s meteorologist projected that this May could witness the hottest day on record, even surpassing previous bank holiday temperatures. The unusual heatwave has prompted warnings about the risks of cold water shock, particularly for swimmers, as water temperatures remain significantly colder than the air.

The UK Health Security Agency issued amber heat health alerts for several regions, cautioning about potential increases in heat-related deaths and health service demands. Specific groups, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health issues, are advised to take precautions during the heatwave. Tips for staying safe include staying hydrated, seeking shade, wearing sunscreen, and avoiding strenuous activities during peak sun hours.
