A caution has been issued by several sleep experts advising against using a fan while sleeping amidst the soaring temperatures expected over the Bank Holiday weekend. Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures in 18 counties in the UK could reach 34C or higher on Monday and Tuesday as the ongoing heatwave persists.
The Met Office has projected potential highs of 35C on Monday and Tuesday, which could mark the hottest days ever recorded in May. The UKV weather model suggests a surge in temperatures to 34C in Lincolnshire on Monday, with central and southern England experiencing temperatures in the low-30s.
London and the southwest could witness highs of 35C on Tuesday. Data indicates that 18 English counties may experience temperatures of 34C or above. To combat the discomfort of warm nights, many individuals have resorted to using fans for quick relief. Nonetheless, experts caution against leaving the fan on overnight due to potential health risks.
Dr. Kiran Dintyala, speaking to Sleep Advisor, highlighted that fans circulating air can trigger allergies and asthma symptoms due to dust and pollen. Additionally, continuous airflow may lead to room dryness, causing issues like dehydration, dry eyes, sinus infections, bronchitis, and nosebleeds. Sleeping with an open mouth in dry air can result in a sore throat and waking up with stiff muscles due to prolonged exposure to cool air. Mattress Next Day CEO and sleep expert Martin Seeley concurred with Dr. Dintyala’s advice, emphasizing the importance of keeping fans off during the night, regardless of humidity levels.
Symptoms like itchy eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, or breathing difficulties upon waking may indicate that the fan blades are dispersing dust accumulated overnight. Seeley also pointed out that the constant airflow from a fan can dry out nasal passages, leading to excessive mucus production, congestion, head pressure, and headaches.
As temperatures are expected to remain high for the foreseeable future, with a continued heatwave potential, the advice to avoid using fans during sleep becomes crucial. The Met Office forecasts suggest temperatures exceeding 28C will persist until at least Thursday, potentially leading to more warm weather in June. Fine weather conditions are anticipated with occasional showers and thunder in some regions, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to cool air during sleep.
