A German YouTuber emerged victorious in the prestigious Gloucestershire cheese-rolling competition by narrowly defeating a local rival who made a comeback to defend his title.
The recent two-time winner, 24-year-old Tom Kopke, managed to overtake Chris Anderson, a Guinness World Record holder, near the finish line as they chased an 8lb double Gloucester cheese down Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth. Kopke expressed his satisfaction by stating that the cheese he won this year would be the most satisfying.
Both competitors faced the risk of severe injuries as they joined around two dozen thrill-seekers who raced down the steep hillside in the annual adrenaline-pumping cheese-rolling event in Gloucestershire.
Participants bravely sprinted, stumbled, and rolled down Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth in a quest to claim the coveted double Gloucester prize.
While heavy spring rains had made the course slippery, the recent warm weather added to the challenge, making it more hazardous for the racers. Despite the tough conditions, thousands of spectators cheered on the participants.
This year’s competition was particularly intense as Chris Anderson, a 38-year-old Guinness World Record holder, came out of retirement to challenge Tom Kopke, the reigning champion. Kopke, hailing from Munich, emerged victorious by narrowly beating Anderson in the first men’s downhill race.
After retaining his title for the third consecutive year, Kopke was embraced by Anderson at the bottom of the hill upon being declared the winner.
Reflecting on his performance, Kopke commented, “This has been my best year yet, and I pushed myself to stay upright for as long as possible. It’s a tough race, and you have to give it your all to win.”
He added, “The conditions this year were perfect, not too dry, a bit soft, which cushioned the falls. I managed to recover well on the middle section of the hill and sprinted towards the finish.”
When asked about his preparation, Kopke mentioned, “I just shut off my brain and went for it. Throughout the race, I could see Chris ahead of me, and I was determined to catch up.”
On the other hand, Anderson, a seasoned competitor from Brockworth, had previously triumphed 23 times between 2005 and 2022.
Following safety concerns that led to the official competition’s cancellation in 2010, rogue cheese rollers organized their own unofficial event. The traditional chase involves pursuing a cheese down the steep Cooper’s Hill at Brockworth over 200 yards.
After a year’s hiatus due to safety reasons, the lightweight foam cheese used as a substitute was replaced with the authentic cheese. Renowned cheesemaker Rod Smart supplied the cheeses for this year’s event, continuing a tradition spanning over 25 years.
During the event, four 3kg cheeses and three smaller 1.5kg cheeses were used. The quirky tradition, believed to have ancient roots in a spring celebration, has been a part of Gloucestershire’s culture for centuries.
Following the overwhelming attendance of more than 15,000 spectators in 2009, the official event was discontinued. Since then, the race has been held unofficially under close police supervision, with road closures in the vicinity for safety measures.
Competitors from around the world flocked to participate in the eccentric races, attracting international media coverage and attention.
