Notorious for a scandal involving a prison guard at HMP Wandsworth, Linton Weirich has come forward to shed light on corruption within UK correctional facilities. In 2024, Weirich made headlines for engaging in a sexual act with married prison officer Linda De Sousa Abreu, which led to a widely shared explicit video and subsequent police probe.
Weirich, now 38 and with multiple prison stints since 2003, criticized the deteriorating discipline within jails, attributing it to an influx of young and inexperienced staff. He highlighted a prevalent issue of staff corruption, stating that many officers profit more from smuggling items into prisons than from their official salaries.
In an interview with The Sun, Weirich disclosed that De Sousa Abreu had been involved in smuggling Nando’s and Chinese meals to inmates for a significant markup. Reflecting on the aftermath of the viral video, he expressed regret over the negative impact it had on his personal life and family.
Following the circulation of the video, Weirich was transferred from HMP Wandsworth to HMP Swaleside, where he faced a violent attack, further complicating his situation. De Sousa Abreu resigned after the scandal, pleaded guilty to misconduct, and served a brief prison sentence before being released on parole.
Addressing the controversy, De Sousa Abreu denied the allegations of smuggling food and cited staffing challenges at Wandsworth as contributing factors to the misconduct. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice emphasized its commitment to tackling corruption within the prison system through enhanced security measures and rigorous oversight.
Weirich expressed a desire to move forward from the incident, focusing on rebuilding his life. The Mirror has reached out to the MOJ for additional comments on the matter.
