British man detained in Dubai faces perilous conditions

Published on

The family of a father detained in Dubai without explanation is deeply concerned about his well-being, fearing for his life due to the appalling conditions at the facility where he is being held. Ryan Pepper, 27, has been imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates since November 3, 2025, with no charges filed against him and minimal contact with his family. Reports from the advocacy group Detained in Dubai indicate that Ryan has endured physical and psychological abuse, facing threats from his captors while British authorities struggle to gain access to him.

According to his family, Ryan has been deprived of phone communication for months, resorting to smuggled handwritten notes to convey his distressing experiences in custody. Descriptions of the facility as a “hellish” environment and allegations of mistreatment towards detainees have heightened concerns for Ryan’s safety. Initially hopeful of his deportation, the family grew increasingly alarmed as Ryan’s messages painted a grim picture of beatings, isolation, and intimidation suffered by inmates.

Following a detainee’s disclosure of Ryan’s mistreatment and confinement, he was hospitalized due to severe injuries sustained during alleged beatings. Detained in Dubai suggests that the hospitalization was linked to assaults in custody, contradicting the UAE’s official explanation of complications from a previous surgery. Despite efforts by British Embassy officials to visit Ryan, scheduled appointments were reportedly canceled under ambiguous circumstances.

Ryan, who relocated to Dubai seeking a fresh start, found himself entangled in legal trouble upon his return from New York and subsequent arrest. Concerns raised by his family mirror the anxieties shared by other British families whose loved ones are detained in foreign countries with questionable legal practices. The organization’s founder, Radha Stirling, highlights the challenges faced by British officials in verifying torture claims when interactions are monitored by potentially abusive authorities.

The distressing situation faced by Ryan and his family echoes past tragedies where individuals have died in Dubai custody under suspicious circumstances. The family’s plea for reassurance about Ryan’s safety reflects a broader concern for the well-being of detainees and the necessity for transparent and accountable practices in such cases. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has been contacted for a response on the matter.
