A prominent sports retail chain has opted to go into voluntary administration.
Stateside Sports, a leading Australian retailer specializing in NBA jerseys, NFL gear, and sneaker apparel, is currently reviewing the status of 31 of its stores.
Voluntary administration is a temporary process aimed at assisting struggling businesses or maximizing returns for creditors compared to immediate closure.
This process differs from liquidation, which involves dissolving a company by selling assets to settle debts with creditors and shareholders.
While the sports retailer plans to continue operations, the fate of its physical stores and online business remains uncertain.
Antony Resnick and Henry Kwok from advisory firm DVT Mcleods were appointed as voluntary administrators on May 22.
Established in 2017, Stateside Sports offers a range of Australian sports products, including retro NRL jerseys, as well as popular international brands like Nike, Jordan, New Era, and Mitchell & Ness.
Administrator Resnick confirmed that business operations will continue as usual for now, with products available both in-store and online.
He noted that the chain has been impacted by reduced discretionary spending, rising cost pressures, and competition from global retailers.
Resnick highlighted the challenging trading conditions in the Australian retail sector, particularly for Stateside Sports operating within a niche market targeting youth consumers.
