Prison officer avoids jail after flirty texts with inmate

Published on

A prison officer who engaged in flirtatious communication with an inmate has avoided imprisonment. Michaela Crawford exchanged text messages with prisoner Carl Catleugh discussing topics like first dates, heels, perfume, and future plans post his release. The relationship was uncovered when authorities found an iPhone and charger, concealed in a sock, during a cell search at HMP Deerbolt in County Durham.

Durham Crown Court revealed a series of improper Snapchat and text exchanges between the two on the device. In one message, Catleugh expressed his fondness, stating they could have a future together, to which Crawford responded eagerly about wearing heels and perfume on their first date.

Catleugh, currently 32 years old, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited item in prison and received an eight-month suspended sentence for 18 months along with 120 hours of community work. Crawford, aged 34, admitted to misconduct in public office during a period between August 20 and 22, 2024.

During the court session, Chris Baker, Crawford’s defense, acknowledged that the case warranted a custodial sentence but highlighted her clean record, early admission of guilt, and the breach of trust occurring over a brief period. Baker emphasized Crawford’s positive attributes, indicating that she no longer works in the Prison Service and is deemed a low risk for re-offense.

Judge Mark McKone admonished Crawford for betraying the trust placed in her as a prison officer, allowing the inmate to possess and use a phone for personal conversations, including discussions about risking job loss and imprisonment. Despite not finding evidence of Crawford smuggling the phone into the prison, McKone criticized her prioritization of personal interests over professional duties. The judge acknowledged Crawford’s potential for rehabilitation and her responsibilities as a single mother, granting a 12-month suspended sentence and mandating 200 hours of community service and a fine of £150 by September 1.
