“Gordon Banks’ World Cup Medal & Save Jersey Up for Auction”

Published on

Gordon Banks’ 1966 World Cup winners’ medal and the jersey he wore during his famous ‘Save of the Century’ in 1970 are up for auction and expected to fetch around half a million pounds. These prized items will be available for bidding next month at the 2026 World Cup event. A renowned football historian described these pieces as the ultimate collectibles for devoted England supporters.

Experts overseeing the auction anticipate that Banks’ medal and shirt could each command between £200,000 and £300,000, potentially totaling over £500,000. Additionally, Peter Shilton’s shirt from the moment Diego Maradona scored his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal will also be part of the auction.

Football historian Grant Bage emphasized the historical significance of these items, labeling them as invaluable artifacts for passionate fans and collectors alike. He praised Gordon Banks as one of the finest goalkeepers in history, highlighting the exceptional value of his 1966 World Cup medal and the iconic 1970 save jersey.

Although Banks had previously sold these items before his passing in 2019, they are now being reintroduced to the market by their undisclosed current owners. The shirt worn during Banks’ legendary save against Pele in the 1970 England vs. Brazil match will be among the items up for bidding on June 25th.

Recent speculations suggesting CIA involvement in Banks’ illness, leading to his absence in the 1970 World Cup quarter-final against West Germany, have resurfaced. This controversy resulted in Peter Bonetti replacing Banks during that critical match.

Grant Bage, known for his biographical work on Sir Alf Ramsey, reflected on Banks’ impact on English football, reminiscing about the 1966 and 1970 tournaments. He shared his personal memories of watching the 1970 World Cup games and expressed regret over Banks’ absence during crucial matches.

The 1970 World Cup tournament holds a special place in history, being the first UK event televised in color, creating vivid and enduring images. Grant Bage highlighted the tournament’s significance, emphasizing the lasting impact of those memorable matches.

When Banks sold his medal in 2001 for £124,750, he explained that it was to support his family and due to security concerns. The auctioneers now estimate that Peter Shilton’s shirt could also fetch between £200,000 and £300,000 at the upcoming auction.
