“Olympic Swimmer Tom Dean Launches Drowning Prevention Campaign”

Published on

Triple Olympic gold medalist swimmer Tom Dean has announced plans to launch a drowning prevention campaign and offer complimentary swimming lessons following the tragic death of a 12th individual in open water. In recent days, three more teenage boys have lost their lives while swimming outdoors amidst rising temperatures in the UK. Startling data shows that a significant number of parents in the UK have never discussed water safety with their children.

Tom, who won two gold medals in Tokyo in 2021 and a third in Paris in 2024, expressed concern over the insufficient measures in place to safeguard people. He intends to provide free or discounted swimming sessions to 13-17-year-olds as a safer alternative to open water activities. The swimmer emphasized the importance of water safety, citing the alarming statistics of drowning incidents, particularly during warmer months.

The campaign aims to educate schools, colleges, leisure centers, and communities on water safety. Initially focusing on Hull, York, Warrington, Windsor, and Maidenhead, Tom hopes to expand the initiative to more areas. Safety experts have issued stern warnings to educators as children flock to natural water bodies to cool off during the hot weather.

Mark Camp-Overy, CEO of Leisure Focus and Tom Dean Swim School, emphasized the collaboration with various organizations to spread the crucial water safety message nationwide. The campaign’s central theme for this summer is “Don’t become a memory,” aiming to raise awareness and prevent further tragedies.

Recent incidents across the country have highlighted the urgency of promoting water safety. The campaign’s launch follows a series of heartbreaking deaths involving young individuals in various water bodies. Organizations like Martin House Children’s Hospice are urging families to engage in water safety discussions ahead of the summer holidays to prevent avoidable accidents.

The push for greater awareness and education on water safety seeks to reduce the risk of drowning incidents and protect individuals, especially during the warmer months.
