“Proposed Changes at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Spark Concern”

Published on

Families are reeling from the repercussions of proposed significant changes that could result in the closure of a crucial ward at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, leaving many feeling devastated. The hospital trust is considering revamping its 4C general paediatrics medical ward, which caters to young patients with intricate needs. This proposal has deeply affected the staff, who were heartbroken upon learning that the current setup of the ward would essentially be shut down.

Around 75 healthcare workers, including nurses, healthcare assistants, catering staff, and ward managers, will be reassigned to other areas. Alder Hey officials clarified that the ward is not being closed but rather undergoing a transformation to become an extended Paediatric Assessment Unit/Emergency Decision Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Unit, altering the way care is provided on Ward 4C.

For Aliesha Morley, 29, the news is particularly distressing as Ward 4C has been a vital support for her over the past two years. Her daughter, born with complex needs, has received care on Ward 4C, forging strong bonds with the medical teams there. Aliesha expressed how crucial the staff’s familiarity with her daughter’s needs has been, providing a sense of security during their frequent visits.

The impending changes mean that Aliesha and her daughter will no longer have the same access to the ward, causing deep distress. The family’s trust in the hospital, built over the past two years, is now shaken, leaving them anxious about the future care their daughter will receive.

In response to concerns, Alder Hey issued an updated statement outlining the proposed redesign of Ward 4C to enhance care delivery, emphasizing a shift towards rapid assessment and same-day emergency care pathways. The hospital ensures that patient safety and quality of care remain top priorities, with a commitment to supporting staff throughout the transition process without any job losses.

The hospital pledges to collaborate with families and staff during the consultation to ensure a smooth implementation of the changes while maintaining continuity of care and providing adequate support to all involved.
