A significant number of families who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a child are facing delays of six months or more in discovering the cause of death. This delay is due to a shortage of qualified pathologists trained to conduct postmortem examinations on children. Dr. Marta Cohen, a Paediatric pathologist, has come out of retirement to assist in reducing the long waiting times that grieving parents are enduring. She expressed that the current situation is the most critical in the past two decades.
One family deeply affected by this issue is Nathan and Fiona Robinson from Doncaster, who waited seven agonizing months for a postmortem examination after the sudden loss of their two-year-old son, Alfie. In May 2022, Fiona found her son lifeless in bed when she tried to wake him up. She described the heartbreaking moment, stating that she immediately knew he had passed away.
With no prior warning signs, Fiona and Nathan were left in a state of uncertainty until the pathology team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital could provide them with answers regarding Alfie’s death. The couple expressed that they no longer function as typical parents, constantly plagued by questions and fears about what could have been done differently and the well-being of their surviving child.
The delays in obtaining answers have been attributed to a national shortage of pathologists, with more than a third of pathologist positions remaining vacant. The Royal College of Pathologists highlighted that recruitment barriers include a lack of qualified professionals, financial constraints, and delays in approval processes. Nathan emphasized the importance of swift answers for parents dealing with unexplained deaths to enable them to begin rebuilding their shattered lives.
Sheffield Children’s Hospital conducts approximately 500 postmortem examinations on children annually, with about 120 cases involving sudden and unexpected deaths. Dr. Marta Cohen, the lead paediatric and perinatal pathologist, currently handles 85% of sudden death cases after returning from retirement. She emphasized that the number of pathologists has been declining for two decades due to the complexity of cases, workforce shortages, and high pressure.
According to the Royal College of Pathologists, there are only 53 consultant pathologists in the UK, with certain regions lacking child pathologists, leading to significant strain on consultants. Dr. Cohen mentioned that bodies are sometimes received a month after death from distant locations due to coroners struggling to find a pathologist. She emphasized the need for government investment in training to address these delays.
In response to the situation, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson acknowledged the distress faced by families due to delays in obtaining answers and assured a commitment to creating more training posts in the NHS, particularly in specialties with high demand.
