Lindsay and Craig Foreman have initiated a desperate hunger strike as a final measure while being held in an Iranian prison on charges of espionage.
Craig is currently in the perilous third week of his hunger strike, a critical phase that may lead to severe harm and organ failure, while Lindsay is on the 11th day of her own protest. Reports suggest that prison guards tried to discourage Lindsay from continuing the hunger strike by using deceitful tactics, resulting in her being a few days behind her husband.
The couple, residents of East Sussex, were detained in January 2025 while traveling through Iran and have been imprisoned for over 500 days. Despite the UK government asserting their innocence as tourists, they have faced harsh conditions in Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison, prompting them to resort to a hunger strike. The Foreign Office advises against travel to Iran due to its history of holding foreign citizens as hostages for political leverage.
Communication with their family has been severed after the couple’s interview with the BBC in early May, where they exposed the appalling circumstances within Evin Prison. Their son Joe Bennett, 32, mentioned that their phone cards were confiscated by prison authorities as a punishment. The couple’s inability to interact with their loved ones has added to their ordeal.
Joe disclosed that Lindsay was misled by authorities who falsely presented a letter from Craig, purportedly indicating he had ceased the hunger strike. This manipulation left Lindsay feeling betrayed and determined to persist with the protest.
The family has been deeply affected by the couple’s distressing accounts of life in Evin Prison, including witnessing executions and enduring a climate of fear and intimidation. Publicly, they advocate for Lindsay and Craig’s release, but privately, the emotional toll is significant.
Joe and his siblings recently visited 10 Downing Street to submit a petition with over 84,000 signatures urging for their parents’ release. They emphasize the need for high-level political involvement and swift diplomatic measures to bring Lindsay and Craig home.
Efforts are underway by the British Embassy in Iran to address the issue of the couple’s phone cards with Iranian authorities. The UK government has been actively engaging to secure the release of Lindsay and Craig, condemning their unjust incarceration.
Supporters can contribute to the campaign to Free Lindsay and Craig by signing the petition and donating to the GoFundMe page.
