“Anti-Israel Commentators Barred from UK Spark Controversy”

Published on

Two prominent American commentators known for expressing strong anti-Israel sentiments have been barred from entering the United Kingdom. Cenk Uygur, the host of the online talk show The Young Turks, and his nephew, streamer Hasan Piker, revealed that they were denied entry to the UK to participate in SXSW London. Additionally, Uygur stated that he was also prohibited from speaking at an event at Oxford University.

Piker faced backlash previously for stating that America “deserved 9/11,” a comment he later apologized for in 2019. He has also made controversial remarks comparing Hamas favorably to Israel, expressing a preference for Hamas over Israel. Despite claiming to be anti-Israel rather than antisemitic, his views have stirred controversy.

Their electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) were revoked last week following a decision by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who deemed their presence in the UK not in the public interest. This action echoes the government’s similar move against Kanye West earlier this year due to anti-Semitic comments.

The ban was reportedly imposed out of concerns that their presence could fuel anti-Semitism. Uygur took to social media to express his frustration, questioning the limits on freedom of speech and attributing the ban to pressure from a foreign entity. Piker echoed these sentiments, accusing Israel of influencing the UK’s decision-making.

Jewish organization Community Security Trust urged caution on hosting Piker, citing his history of promoting anti-Semitic narratives and extremist views. Labour MP David Taylor applauded the visa revocation and called for event organizers to review their vetting processes to prevent similar incidents.

Amid the controversy, Arwa Elrayess, president of the Oxford Union, raised concerns over silencing dissenting voices. The Union expressed its commitment to fostering open debate, exploring alternative venues like online platforms to ensure discussions take place.

The Home Office defended its decision, stating that the revocation of ETAs is based on assessing potential risks to UK society. In a separate incident, the government also blocked 11 foreign nationals labeled as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK before a rally led by Tommy Robinson.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized the bans as a suppression of criticism against the Israeli government, warning of a concerning trend. SXSW London reiterated its commitment to diverse voices and open dialogue, emphasizing its focus on hosting a broad range of perspectives during the event.

This rewritten article highlights the barring of two American commentators from the UK due to their anti-Israel views, the ensuing controversy, and reactions from various stakeholders.
