According to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), physical activity is a vital component of successful obesity treatment. The statement emphasizes that a team-based support system, involving healthcare professionals, is essential for individuals to develop and sustain healthy habits for long-term weight loss.

Published in the journal Circulation, the AHA statement advocates for a holistic treatment strategy that prioritizes physical activity. It highlights that regular exercise yields various health benefits for overweight individuals, irrespective of weight reduction.

Professor Damon Swift, head of the AHA writing group for the statement, emphasizes the importance of promoting physical activity alongside weight loss for heart disease risk mitigation. He underscores that physical activity contributes significantly to both weight loss and its maintenance, offering substantial cardiovascular and metabolic health advantages, even when the scale does not show significant changes.

Swift notes that while dietary adjustments are key for weight loss, incorporating physical activity plays a pivotal role in supporting other treatments like healthy eating, weight loss medications, or surgery. He points out that exercise aids in additional weight loss, muscle preservation, and overall health improvement, especially when combined with resistance training.

The statement also stresses the significance of maintaining weight loss, highlighting the correlation between consistent physical activity levels and long-term weight management success. Even if high activity levels are not achievable, regular exercise remains beneficial for overall health and weight maintenance.

In conclusion, the AHA recommends a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity for adults to promote better health outcomes.
