A devoted nurse, Pauline Thornton, generously saved four lives through organ donation after her passing. Having served at Hull University Teaching Hospitals for 42 years, she selflessly donated her heart, kidneys, and liver following a brain haemorrhage in February. To honor her legacy, staff are organizing a fundraising climb of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough for the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity and Hull Help for Refugees.
Pauline’s daughter, Claire Thornton, a nurse in Hull, highlighted her mother’s lifelong kindness and the impact she continues to have even after death. Starting her nursing career in Hull in 1984, Pauline worked in various roles, including as a scrub nurse at Hull Royal Infirmary and charge nurse at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham. Despite transitioning to flexible retirement in 2019, she remained dedicated by working in paediatric theatres at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.
In addition to her nursing career, Pauline volunteered with Hull Help for Refugees, demonstrating her altruism by tending to an allotment to share produce with colleagues. Claire expressed the hope that sharing her mother’s story would raise awareness of the life-saving potential of organ donation, emphasizing the importance of knowing and respecting loved ones’ wishes in such critical decisions.
Janine Tate, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull United Teaching Hospitals, commended Pauline’s family for their decision to donate, acknowledging Pauline’s lifelong commitment to helping others. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign, which introduced opt-out legislation for organ donation in 2020, aims to enhance organ transplantation practices and increase life-saving opportunities through innovative methods like organ reconditioning.
Inspired by Spain’s successful organ donation culture, England’s opt-out system for organ donation was implemented in May 2020, presuming individuals as donors unless they choose to opt out.
