Kirsty Gallagher Updates on Brain Tumor Battle

Published on

Kirsty Gallagher has provided an update on her brain tumor situation. Last year, the 50-year-old presenter underwent radiotherapy in a bid to reduce the size of the untreatable tumor located in the inner ear canal on her right side.

The former Sky Sports host received a diagnosis of a non-cancerous acoustic neuroma in the summer of 2021 and has since received radiotherapy treatment.

During a recent appearance on the Vanessa show, Kirsty shared that she is awaiting the results of an upcoming MRI scan to assess the effectiveness of the radiotherapy. She disclosed to Vanessa Feltz that she discovered the brain tumor, an acoustic neuroma, in her right ear, which had caused her partial deafness a few years ago. Kirsty mentioned that while the radiotherapy may not eliminate the tumor completely, it aims to reduce its size and suppress the DNA responsible for its growth. She expressed the challenges she faces due to severe hearing impairment and worsened tinnitus following the treatment.

Since going public with her diagnosis, Kirsty has openly discussed her struggles with tinnitus and hearing loss stemming from the tumor. She previously explained the risks associated with surgical removal of the benign growth.

Recounting the moment she realized something was wrong, Kirsty recalled waking up one day with hearing loss in her right ear. Following medical consultations, she was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a common benign tumor that affects many individuals.

Despite recommendations from medical professionals for a hearing aid, Kirsty has opted to manage her condition without one. She shared her emotional experiences dealing with noise sensitivity and the challenges she faces in social situations due to her profound hearing loss in one ear.

In a heartfelt statement last year, Kirsty revealed her ongoing battle with an acoustic neuroma and the uncertainties surrounding her radiotherapy treatment. She emphasized the demands of managing her health alongside her responsibilities as a mother.
