“Peter Mandelson Used Trackable Links in Covert Labour Campaign”

Published on

Peter Mandelson distributed trackable links to current Cabinet ministers while organizing a covert campaign for the Labour Party, as revealed in the latest batch of official documents. The documents disclose that the disgraced former US ambassador was actively involved in promoting a Labour victory in the Oxford University Chancellor election by sharing Grabify-generated links, which can monitor users’ technical data before redirecting them.

Key government figures, including Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, pensions minister Torsten Bell, Labour Party chair Ellie Reeves, and Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty, received the same trackable link. These links were part of a vast collection of WhatsApp messages, emails, and official communications released in response to a House of Commons Humble Address concerning Mandelson’s tenure and departure as Britain’s ambassador to the US. The documents illustrate Mandelson’s efforts in mobilizing voter turnout from summer to autumn of 2024.

During this period, Mandelson, still serving as the chairman of the lobbying firm Global Counsel, encouraged ministers to register to vote, engage other Oxford alumni, and spread campaign messages within alumni circles. He specifically requested recipients to share the registration link with like-minded graduates and alumni groups to support a progressive candidate. Mandelson framed the campaign in political terms, highlighting the opportunity for a Labour-affiliated figure to secure victory in a traditionally Conservative-dominated role.

Moreover, the documents highlighted Mandelson’s strategy of initially sharing the official Oxford University registration link with ministers before substituting it with a trackable Grabify link, identified as “OPKKPP.” Despite the eventual redirection to the university’s registration page, the use of third-party tracking links raised concerns about data collection and transparency. Cybersecurity expert Kevin Walker emphasized the potential risks associated with trackable URLs, urging caution when clicking on unfamiliar or disguised links.

The revelations underscore the intricate methods employed in Mandelson’s campaign, which heavily relied on government officials and Labour networks to bolster support for the Labour Party’s Oxford Chancellor election bid. The disclosures accompanying the documents have prompted questions regarding the substitution of the official university link with a trackable alternative and shed light on the intricate tactics utilized during the campaign. The release of these documents coincided with the Government’s response to a House of Commons Humble Address concerning Lord Mandelson’s diplomatic appointment and subsequent dismissal.

The Mirror reached out to Peter Mandelson for comment on these developments.
