The grandmother of the individual who fatally stabbed Henry Nowak in Southampton expressed concern about the impact on both families involved. Vickrum Digwa, 23, was found guilty of murdering 18-year-old Mr. Nowak in a violent knife attack last December. Digwa, a Sikh Briton, stabbed the young student multiple times and falsely claimed he was racially abused by Nowak.
Following far-right disturbances in Southampton linked to Nowak’s death, Digwa’s grandmother disclosed that family members are contemplating leaving the area. Bimla Kaur, 75, who resides in Southampton, lamented the tragic situation, stating that the incident has shattered both Henry’s family and her own. Despite the difficulties, she expressed ongoing support for Digwa while grappling with the consequences of his actions.
In response to threats directed at Digwa’s father and brother after his conviction, they sought refuge in a secure location away from their home. Kaur emphasized the fear gripping the entire family due to threats they have received, despite their long-standing ties to Southampton. While uncertain about their future in their current residence, the family feels trapped as they have no alternative living arrangements.
The fatal encounter between Mr. Nowak and Digwa occurred near Digwa’s residence as Nowak was returning home from a pub. The court revealed that a confrontation ensued when Nowak noticed a knife carried by Digwa, a kirpan as required by the Sikh faith. The situation escalated when Digwa, identified as a member of the martial Nihang Sikh order, took Nowak’s phone and fatally stabbed him after a brief exchange.
Judge Mousley KC recounted the tragic events, highlighting the violent nature of the incident and the subsequent false claims made by Digwa’s brother to the authorities. The family continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy, living in fear amidst the community they have long been a part of.
