Matt Baker is making a comeback to the BBC after stepping away from The One Show six years ago. The former Blue Peter host, who continues to appear on Countryfile, will lead a new series named Matt Baker: Life With Dogs on BBC2 daytime. The show, produced by his company Big Circus Media, will explore the diverse roles that dogs play in human lives, from farm work and therapy to assisting individuals with disabilities and serving alongside law enforcement and the military.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Matt shared, “Dogs have always been a passion of mine, and I am thrilled to create a series that highlights the special bond between humans and dogs. I will not only showcase my professional dog training qualifications but also introduce viewers to an array of remarkable canines that enhance our lives in various ways, from cancer detection to companionship. This show is a tribute to our cherished companions.”
A BBC insider commented, “Matt’s return with this new series will delight viewers as he is a beloved presenter. With his lifelong affection for dogs, he is the perfect host for a program that uncovers the multifaceted roles our four-legged friends play in our lives. The series will delve deep into the indispensable connection between humans and dogs.”
The forthcoming series, currently in production and set to premiere later this year, follows Matt’s recent loss of his collie, Bob, which deeply impacted him and his family. The episodes will feature stories on how dogs can be trained for medical detection, herding, therapy, and comfort in healthcare settings.
Matt, who split his time between his Chiltern Hills smallholding and his parents’ farm, revealed his heartfelt sentiments after losing Bob. He expressed gratitude for the profound impact Bob had on their family and farm life, emphasizing the unique bond shared with dogs.
Moreover, viewers hope that Matt’s new series will match the success of ITV’s For the Love of Dogs and Pete Wicks’ For Dogs’ Sake on UKTV. Matt departed from The One Show in 2020 after a nine-year stint, citing a desire for new opportunities and more time with his family. He initially joined the show in 2010 following his runner-up finish in Strictly Come Dancing, taking over from Jason Manford.
