“Rise in Emergency C-Sections Raises Concerns in England”

Published on

In England, there has been a significant increase in emergency caesarean deliveries, with a quarter of all babies now being born through this procedure. This rise in C-section births, including planned ones, over the past five years has sparked concerns about a potential link to anxiety among expectant mothers.

Recent investigations by BBC revealed a decline in vaginal deliveries without the use of instruments like forceps, dropping from 53% to 43%. The reasons behind emergency C-sections are not officially reported by the NHS, which previously aimed to maintain low caesarean rates until targets were removed in 2022.

Various maternity safety issues in different regions like Morecambe Bay, East Kent, and Shrewsbury, and Telford have highlighted tragic cases of maternal and infant mortality, often associated with hesitance in performing caesarean sections.

Experts, including Professor Shakila Thangaratinam from Liverpool University, have raised concerns about the increasing reliance on emergency C-sections without a proportional decrease in complications. They emphasize the need to address rising fears among women, families, and medical staff, which could influence more individuals to opt for or recommend caesarean births.

Research by BBC Verify indicates a shift in birthing trends in England, where planned caesareans now account for 20% of deliveries, while emergency caesareans have risen from 18% to 26%. Comparatively, emergency caesarean rates in Scotland stand at 22%, in Wales at 20%, and in Northern Ireland at 16%.

Prof Marian Knight from the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit highlights a notable transformation in childbirth practices in England compared to other European countries, as evidenced by the escalating rates of caesarean births with no corresponding improvements in stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

Legal claims against the NHS related to maternity issues have surged by 11% over the last five years, often questioning the timing or necessity of caesarean procedures. Health authorities stress that each birth decision is made based on individual circumstances and medical advice to ensure the safest approach.

Personal accounts, like that of Khushi at Northwick Park Hospital in London, shed light on the emotional and physical challenges faced by mothers undergoing emergency caesareans, emphasizing the need for holistic support during the recovery process.
