“Beware! High-Strength Spirits Barred on Flights”

Travelers often enjoy bringing home local spirits as a souvenir from their holidays. However, some passengers may face a surprise at the airport if they overlook an important detail on the label.

The issue revolves around the alcohol strength of the spirits. Airlines and aviation authorities prohibit passengers from carrying drinks with more than 70% alcohol by volume (ABV) on flights, whether in hand luggage or checked baggage.

According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), alcoholic beverages with ABV above 24% but not exceeding 70% are allowed in retail packaging, up to a maximum of five liters per passenger. Anything exceeding 70% ABV is strictly forbidden.

While most mainstream spirits fall within the permissible limit, certain high-strength products like overproof rums, grain alcohols such as Everclear, Spirytus Rektyfikowany, and specific absinthe varieties can surpass the limit.

Travelers purchasing local spirits overseas should verify the alcohol strength before packing for their flight to avoid any issues. It is crucial to understand the regulations of different UK airlines regarding carrying alcohol on board.

Jet2 emphasizes adherence to dangerous goods regulations, explicitly banning alcoholic drinks stronger than 70% ABV. British Airways and easyJet also have clear guidelines prohibiting drinks above 70% ABV, with allowances for drinks between 24% and 70% ABV up to five liters per passenger.

Ryanair prohibits alcohol stronger than 70% ABV and restricts passengers from consuming their own alcohol on board. TUI follows international dangerous goods regulations, strictly banning drinks with ABV over 70% while permitting lower-strength beverages within quantity limits.

The restriction on high-strength alcohol is based on aviation safety concerns as such alcohol is more flammable than standard spirits. Travelers are advised to check the alcohol content before heading to the airport to avoid any inconvenience during check-in or security checks.
