“Woman Receives Heartbreaking GPS Alert Before Husband’s Tragic Death”

Published on

A woman shared her heartbreaking experience of receiving a notification from her husband’s GPS tracker alerting her of an accident just before authorities informed her of his tragic death. Paula Overton, 32, received a text message from her husband Ben’s Garmin watch while he was cycling home from work. Little did she know that within an hour, she would receive the devastating news of his fatal crash.

Ben lost his life in February 2022 in a head-on collision with a car on a rural road in Crawley, Sussex. Recollecting the day she lost Ben, Paula mentioned sensing something was amiss even before the police arrived at her doorstep.

Following the driver’s admission of partial liability for the accident, Paula expressed her disbelief at the sudden turn of events. She described the day as seemingly normal, with Ben sharing plans for a vacation in Cyprus around her birthday. However, her world turned upside down when she received the unusual automated message from Ben’s GPS device.

As she anxiously awaited confirmation from emergency services, Paula’s worst fears were confirmed when authorities disclosed the accident. Subsequently, a police officer arrived at her residence, confirming Ben’s passing, leaving Paula devastated.

Childhood sweethearts, Ben and Paula’s relationship had endured long distances and various life experiences before their marriage in 2019. After Ben’s untimely demise, Paula faced a lack of updates from the authorities due to ongoing investigations. Despite multiple reviews, the case was eventually closed by the police and CPS last year.

This decision prompted the long-awaited inquest into Ben’s death to take place in February this year, four years after the incident. Paula sought legal aid and fought for justice, leading to the defendant accepting partial responsibility for the tragedy.

Paula expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of Ben and the emotional turmoil of seeking justice. The inquest revealed compelling GPS evidence suggesting Ben was not at fault, providing some closure for Paula. Solicitors from Fletchers pursued compensation from the driver’s insurers, acknowledging partial liability, offering Paula a sense of closure and justice.

Fletchers Solicitors representative, Victoria Martin, acknowledged the immense pain Paula endured over the years and hoped that their legal efforts would bring answers and a sense of justice for Ben.
