Government operations in Alabel have been halted following a significant earthquake that hit the Philippines today. Alabel, the capital of Sarangani province, experienced the impact of the earthquake, which was felt in Davao City around 7:40 am local time on June 8, 2026. Initially estimated at a magnitude of 8.2, the earthquake has been downsized to 7.8 by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

As the world awaits the aftermath of the quake, tsunami alerts have been raised for various countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and the west coast of the United States. While New Zealand and Australia initially expressed concerns about potential tsunamis, they have since stated that there is no longer a threat of giant waves.

The Local Government Unit of Alabel, under Mayor Lilibeth “Ybing” J. Salarda, MPA, has declared the suspension of classes at all levels and government office operations until further notice due to the earthquake. Residents are advised to prioritize safety by staying in open areas away from buildings and monitoring official channels for updates.
