“UK Considers Ban on Social Media for Under-16s Amid Safety Concerns”

Published on

Keir Starmer is scheduled to speak with technology leaders amidst growing speculation about an impending announcement on prohibiting social media use for individuals under 16. The Prime Minister is expected to deliver a morning address emphasizing the importance of artificial intelligence (AI benefiting all and introducing new tools to assist individuals in finding employment.

An announcement regarding online safety measures is anticipated, with Children’s commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza emphasizing the need for action against technology companies’ unrestricted access to minors, often facilitated by features that heighten risks. Pressure mounts on the government to mandate phone companies to implement technology preventing young individuals from sending or receiving explicit images, due to the escalating threat of sextortion.

Although a final decision is pending, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall hinted at potential restrictions on millions of youths accessing platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram until they reach 16. Parents participating in the government’s online safety consultation overwhelmingly supported age restrictions similar to those in Australia, signaling a strong push for a ban.

Notably, not all parties advocate for a social media ban for minors. Ian Russell, whose daughter tragically took her life after exposure to harmful content on platforms like Instagram, warns against the ban, suggesting it may not address the root issues necessitating enhanced safety measures on digital platforms.

In a bid to address job-related challenges, Keir Starmer will introduce AI tools dubbed “Jobcentre in your pocket” aimed at facilitating job searches and career progression. These tools, developed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), will offer round-the-clock guidance on job hunting, resume building, and career advancement, particularly crucial in light of the rising number of young individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training.

The unveiling of these AI tools underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring technological advancements benefit all segments of society, fostering growth, job creation, and skill development across the nation. No. 10 described these forthcoming tools as a trial initiative that will provide personalized job and career advice, aiming to act as a convenient resource akin to a virtual job center.

As discussions on the impact of AI on employment intensify, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has welcomed initiatives focusing on early career support, skill development, and worker representation. The TUC stresses the importance of translating promises of fairness into tangible actions, advocating for enhanced worker rights, investment in skills for the AI transition, and active worker involvement in shaping technology’s application and evolution.
