Jeremy Clarkson’s demeanor has noticeably mellowed since transitioning from worldwide automotive exploits to farm life, as stated by his long-term collaborator and executive producer of Clarkson’s Farm, Andy Wilman.
Wilman, who shared years of work with Clarkson on Top Gear and The Grand Tour before embarking on the successful Amazon series Clarkson’s Farm, expressed that the presenter is currently thriving in “the sweetest spot” of his professional journey.
The television show chronicles Clarkson, aged 66, and his team as they confront the trials of managing his Diddly Squat Farm near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.
During an appearance on the High Performance podcast, Wilman, in response to host Jake Humphrey, reflected on whether the Jeremy Clarkson viewers witness on Clarkson’s Farm resembles the persona from Top Gear.
He remarked, “The skills remain consistent as we’ve discussed. However, there is a noticeable change. While audiences see a more composed individual, I observe the unedited footage.”
Wilman highlighted that despite Clarkson’s heightened energy levels during filming, there is a distinct shift in his demeanor post-shoots.
He remarked, “Off-camera, he exudes tranquility. Although he elevates his performance and dialogue once filming commences, there is an underlying sense of serenity. He frequently discusses his passion for farming with the crew. He is truly content, presenting a different side of Jeremy, in short.”
Wilman revealed that Clarkson’s newfound enthusiasm for farming has unearthed a previously unseen aspect of his character. He added, “The farm has accentuated this aspect. I believe the Jeremy from Top Gear was intense, then dormant. The Grand Tour followed a similar pattern. Farming has provided him with purpose, offering a mode of operation that suits him.”
The producer suggested that farming supplies Clarkson with the sense of fulfillment he craves, minus the stress and constant travel associated with his prior television projects.
“The farm offers a seamless transition into tranquility, akin to a serene ski slope descent. It still requires dedication and mental acuity, but he merely steps out his front door to work, eliminating the need for extensive travel and large crews. That lifestyle can be taxing,” he explained.
Wilman noted that many crew members from Top Gear and The Grand Tour are now part of Clarkson’s Farm team, experiencing a markedly different pace.
He noted, “The crew comprises seasoned veterans from Top Gear and Grand Tour. Their routine involves filming a scene, like moving goats or witnessing a cow’s birth, followed by a relaxed coffee break, sometimes pondering the next steps.”
For Clarkson, this slower rhythm combined with meaningful labor has proven to be an ideal blend.
“They engage in tasks after thoughtful consideration, which is a joy for someone driven to work. However, he is not burdened by strict deadlines or overwhelming expectations,” Wilman emphasized.
