A man tragically lost his life in a drowning incident while trying to rescue his family pet dog. Robbie Jones, the son of the victim, Gareth Jones, has thrown his support behind The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign. Gareth drowned within a minute after entering the sea to save their dog, Connie, off the coast of Hove, East Sussex. Since the incident, Robbie has taken on the role of a water safety advocate, engaging with schools to raise awareness and endorsing The Mirror’s campaign.
Reflecting on the heartbreaking event, Robbie expressed his deep sorrow over the sudden loss of his father and the circumstances surrounding his death. He emphasized the importance of understanding the facts and details, mentioning that watching the CCTV footage of the incident provided him with a sense of closure. Gareth, a former BBC HR department head, was on the beach playing with his dog when a tragic series of events unfolded.
Robbie recounted the sequence of events that led to his father’s untimely demise, highlighting the unexpected challenges they faced that day. Despite Gareth’s swimming abilities and fitness level, he succumbed to the powerful forces of the sea in just 54 seconds. The community rallied together to search for Gareth and Connie, with the dog being found on Brighton Beach and Gareth’s body discovered later near Newhaven.
