A woman, Maja Klaczynska, faced severe health issues allegedly caused by black mould in her newly built residence, leading to concerns of a potential cancer diagnosis by doctors. The 33-year-old, a resident of Silvertown, East London, had to vacate her apartment due to its unlivable state, despite owning a portion of the property. Experiencing debilitating headaches, joint pain, a persistent cough, and fever, Maja underwent medical tests including CT and PET scans to rule out leukaemia or lymphoma. Fortunately, those fears were unfounded.
Having moved into her dream home in July 2022 after relocating from Poland to study in the UK, Maja found her possessions covered in mould, forcing her to leave with only the clothes on her back. Suspecting mould due to a crack in her bath, multiple inspections failed to identify the source of her illness, leaving her anxious about living in a potentially hazardous environment.
Taking legal action against the landlord with the assistance of dispute resolution specialists, Hodge Jones & Allen, Maja claimed that Peabody Trust officials and a builder disregarded her concerns about mould. Independent experts later confirmed the presence of black mould throughout her residence, prompting her relocation to temporary accommodation until the issue was resolved.
Expressing her distress over losing her belongings and being displaced from her home, Maja emphasized the emotional toll of the ordeal. Peabody Trust expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging the challenges Maja faced and assuring that repairs were completed in January by the responsible builder. Meanwhile, Maja’s legal representative highlighted her determination to seek justice and compensation for the hardships endured.
