UK Forces Seize Russian Tanker in Bold Operation

Published on

British authorities launched a daring operation against a sanctioned Russian tanker in the English Channel early Sunday, marking a significant move in the ongoing conflict. The Prime Minister confirmed the successful six-hour military mission, emphasizing its impact on Russia and those supporting President Putin’s actions in Ukraine.

In a groundbreaking initiative led by the UK, Royal Marine Commandos and specialized officers from the National Crime Agency executed a tactical boarding of the vessel Smyrtos. Video footage released by the Ministry of Defence depicted the stealthy insertion of soldiers via a Chinook helicopter onto the 250m oil tanker under the cover of darkness.

Additional footage showcased Royal Marines armed with KS-1 rifles conducting a thorough search of the ship’s cabins, which were found empty as the Russian crew was unarmed. The operation concluded without any violence, injuries, or shots fired. The vessel has been detained and will be relocated to a secure anchorage off the South Coast of England for monitoring.

The successful operation, backed by air support from the Maritime Air Group and naval vessels, was a direct response to the vessel’s involvement in transporting sanctioned Russian oil, which is crucial for funding the conflict in Ukraine. The UK’s decisive action against the shadow fleet aligns with international law and aims to disrupt the illicit financing of Putin’s war efforts.

The Prime Minister’s authorization in March paved the way for British forces to intervene with shadow fleet vessels, such as the Smyrtos, recognized for its role in supporting Russia’s war machinery. The vessel, part of a fleet responsible for a significant portion of Russia’s oil transportation, has been a key component in sustaining the Kremlin’s military operations.

Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed gratitude for the UK’s operation, acknowledging the impact of disrupting Russia’s financial resources on the ongoing conflict. The interception of the shadow fleet vessel was a strategic move to limit the financial backing of the unlawful war in Ukraine, showcasing the UK’s commitment to regional security and international stability.

Government officials, including Cabinet Minister Lucy Nandy and Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis, commended the bravery and professionalism of the armed forces and law enforcement officers involved in the operation. The UK’s proactive stance against the shadow fleet vessels has been instrumental in applying pressure on Russia and hindering the flow of resources supporting the illegal war in Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted the UK’s leading role in combating the shadow fleet, underscoring the effectiveness of sanctions in reducing Russia’s oil and gas revenues. The successful interception of the sanctioned tanker reflects the UK’s continuous efforts to disrupt illicit activities and contribute to global security objectives.
