“UK to Ban Minors from Social Media in 2023”

Published on

A significant move to enhance online safety for children will be implemented early next year, with a ban on minors accessing popular social media platforms. The initiative, spearheaded by Keir Starmer, will restrict under-16s from using platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X, following a similar measure in Australia. While some families affected by tragic incidents support the ban, there is opposition from others.

The proposed restrictions are anticipated to be approved by Parliament before Christmas and enforced by Spring. Emphasizing the importance of child safety, the Prime Minister affirmed the necessity of the ban during a No10 press briefing. Starmer, a parent himself, acknowledged the benefits of social media for youth but emphasized the necessity of prioritizing safety through this decision.

The government’s action comes in response to parental concerns over children’s online exposure and requests for assistance. A majority of parents (90%) surveyed expressed a desire for the ban, while a significant proportion of children (62%) supported age restrictions on social media. However, worries about being excluded if restrictions are implemented were voiced by 72% of respondents.

The move mirrors Australia’s approach, with a prohibition on various platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, Reddit, and Threads. Notably, educational tools like YouTube Kids, Google Classroom, and Lego Play will remain accessible due to their perceived safe nature for children. The ban’s scope may extend to platforms with high-risk features like live-streaming and stranger interactions, impacting how under-16s engage with certain applications.

To enforce the ban, platforms will be mandated to enhance age verification processes, potentially utilizing methods like facial scans or ID checks for users over 18. Ofcom will oversee the ban’s enforcement, focusing on tech companies’ compliance with the regulations. The transition will involve deactivating or pausing accounts of under-16s until they reach the appropriate age for access.

In addition to the ban, the government is exploring supplementary measures such as addressing issues like doom-scrolling and considering curfews on app usage for older teenagers. Further details on age verification plans and potential challenges related to data privacy are expected to be disclosed in July.
