Teddie Beverley, the final surviving member of the musical group The Beverley Sisters, has passed away at 99 years old. The band, consisting of three sisters, gained popularity with their iconic Christmas tunes like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” “Little Donkey,” and “Little Drummer Boy.”
Teddie, also known as Hazel Pamela Chinery, formed the band alongside her twin sister Babette (Babs) and older sister Jocelyn (Joy). The twins were born in 1932, with Joy following in 1929, all celebrating their birthdays on May 5.
While Babs passed away in 2018 at 91, Joy also died at the age of 91 in August 2015. In 2006, the trio was honored as Members of the British Empire in the New Year Honours list.
Originally from Bethnal Green, the sisters later resided in adjacent houses in New Barnet, North London, describing their homes as “detached, but almost touching.” Joy was married to former England captain Billy Wright, Teddie to British water-skiing champion Peter Felix, and later to property developer Donald Cottage in 1973. Babs had a brief marriage in the 1960s before remaining unmarried until her passing.
The group reached the height of their fame during the 1950s and 1960s, making a mark through radio and TV appearances. Their repertoire included popular hits like “Bye Bye Love,” “Always And Forever,” “Sisters,” and a chart-topping rendition of “Greensleeves” in the US.
Known for their synchronized outfits and completing each other’s sentences, the sisters had a close bond, even sharing beds until their teenage years. The Guardian once noted their habit of answering the phone with, “Hello, one of the Beverley Sisters speaking.”
In an interview for Desert Island Discs, the trio mentioned their unified thinking, stating, “Don’t worry about who says what – we all think the same.” Teddie emphasized their strong connection, mentioning their instinctual synchronization, even when breathing.
The Beverley Sisters enjoyed immense success and reportedly had a fan following among the Royal Family, including the Queen Mother. Teddie, acknowledging their natural talent, expressed gratitude for their audiences, highlighting their flawless performances despite never receiving formal music lessons.
