An architect convicted of killing eight women in a series of long-unresolved cases known as the Gilgo Beach murders has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Rex Heuermann, aged 62, who was taken into custody outside his Manhattan office in July 2023, committed the murders between 1993 and 2010.
The victims’ remains were primarily discovered in marshland along the south coast of Long Island, particularly at Gilgo Beach. Initially pleading not guilty to seven of the murders, Heuermann changed his plea in April and confessed to causing the death of an eighth woman, whose name was not disclosed in the charges.
The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings commenced in 2010 after law enforcement found four sets of human remains on the beach. Through DNA analysis and other forensic evidence, authorities were able to identify the victims, many of whom were involved in the sex trade. The bodies of Melissa Barthelemy (24), Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25), Amber Costello (27), and Megan Waterman (22), collectively known as the Gilgo Four, were located at the beach.
Jessica Taylor (20) and Valerie Mack (24) were found along Ocean Parkway, several miles west of Gilgo Beach, while a seventh victim, Sandra Costilla, was discovered over 60 miles away in the Hamptons. Karen Vergata was identified as the eighth victim in 2023. Her remains were found on Fire Island in 1996 and near Gilgo Beach in 2011. Vergata, who went missing at the age of 34, has not had her case linked to Heuermann.
