A tragic incident occurred as a 13-year-old girl lost her life in a drowning accident during a family birthday celebration just a day before her 14th birthday. Palwasha Akbar passed away after encountering difficulties in the River Wharfe at Burnsall in North Yorkshire on May 31. The Assistant North Yorkshire coroner, Alison Norton, confirmed the details on June 18.
Palwasha’s family had gathered at the popular riverside location to mark her upcoming 14th birthday, planned for June 1, with a festive barbecue during the warm May heatwave. The coroner’s report stated that she was at Bolton Abbey in Burnsall when the incident occurred. Despite efforts to rescue her, Palwasha was rushed to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she was later pronounced dead.
The cause of Palwasha’s untimely demise was determined to be drowning. She was originally from Pakistan, born on June 1, 2012, and resided in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The brief hearing was adjourned for a later date.
Unfortunately, Palwasha was one of several individuals who lost their lives in water-related incidents during the intense weather conditions at the close of May. Following her tragic passing, her family released a statement describing her as a compassionate and cheerful young girl, deeply missed by those who knew her.
In response to the alarming number of drownings in England, the Mirror has initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to raise awareness and prevent such catastrophic losses. Advocates have labeled drowning in the UK as an epidemic and a national emergency, urging immediate governmental intervention.
During a single week in May, the UK witnessed a distressing toll of 19 individuals, including children and adults, perishing in water-related accidents amidst a severe heatwave from May 24 to 31. The campaign aims to address these concerning statistics and push for vital safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
