Andy Burnham Wins Makerfield By-Election by Landslide

Published on

Andy Burnham achieved a resounding victory in Makerfield, securing over 9,000 votes to clinch the seat with a significantly increased majority for Labour, leaving Reform far behind in second place.

Despite speculation about Rupert Lowe’s far-right Restore party affecting Reform’s performance, Burnham garnered more votes than all his competitors combined, solidifying his triumph.

This win marks a significant turning point for the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, granting him a return to the Commons where he aims to challenge Keir Starmer for leadership and showcase the success of his strategies to both the public and fellow Labour MPs.

Although Makerfield has traditionally been a Labour stronghold, Reform had gained control in recent local council elections. Despite facing challenges amid the government’s declining popularity, Burnham’s substantial victory, particularly in terms of margin, sets a strong precedent for his future political endeavors.

While some may argue that a by-election is not indicative of a general election outcome, Burnham’s popularity in Greater Manchester undoubtedly played a role in his success, raising questions about his potential success in other regions.

Following this election outcome, Labour MPs, disheartened by the prevailing negativity towards Keir Starmer and the government, have found a glimmer of optimism. Burnham’s ability to attract progressive voters and combat the rise of Farage and Reform has bolstered hopes within the party.

Despite the Prime Minister’s resilience and commitment to governance, internal preparations are underway to counter potential leadership challenges. Allies are mobilizing support and strategizing for Starmer’s campaign, anticipating any future developments.

As tensions rise and potential leadership disputes loom, Burnham’s camp seeks to avoid contentious confrontations and urges the Prime Minister to consider a timely exit strategy. With various contenders and uncertainties emerging, the political landscape remains unpredictable.

Not only does Labour face introspection, but Reform also grapples with defeat in another hard-fought by-election. Their setbacks in recent contests underscore the shifting dynamics of political power, raising doubts about Farage’s previous assertions of future triumphs.
