The 27th wedding anniversary of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh is being celebrated today. Prince Edward and Sophie tied the knot at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on June 19, 1999, in what was considered a more casual royal wedding. Notable guests included the late Queen, Prince Philip, King Charles, and Princes William and Harry.
Sophie looked stunning in a wedding dress by Samantha Shaw and wore a tiara from the late Queen’s private collection. The couple opted for a relaxed dress code, requesting guests to wear evening wear and skip the hats.
However, some royals seemed to bend the rules, with Queen Elizabeth sporting a lilac fascinator and Princess Anne choosing a green hair accessory. The late Queen Mother, Edward’s grandmother, still wore a hat, which may have pleased the couple, as she rarely appeared without one.
In 1999, upon joining the Royal Family, Sophie was given the title of Countess of Wessex, unlike Camilla and Kate, who became duchesses. In 2023, King Charles granted Edward and Sophie the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, fulfilling a long-standing wish of Prince Philip and the former monarch.
During an interview, Sophie shared how Philip expressed his wish for Edward to inherit the title in just 11 words, leaving them stunned. This gesture was a tribute to Edward’s dedication to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a youth program cherished by Philip.
The couple, parents to Lady Louise Windsor and James, the Earl of Wessex, are known for their steady support within the Royal Family. With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from royal duties, Edward and Sophie have taken on a more prominent role.
Outside their royal obligations, Edward and Sophie prefer a private life at their Bagshot Park estate in Surrey. They have recently gained more public attention while maintaining a low profile.
