Ukraine is preparing for significant drone and missile onslaughts from Russia following the Kremlin’s declaration of upcoming “massive group strikes.” The city of Kharkiv in Ukraine was recently struck by guided aerial bombs, resulting in casualties and destruction. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued threats of intensified air attacks on Ukraine in retaliation for Ukraine’s forceful actions against Russia. The Kremlin expressed anger over a recent major assault by Ukraine on Moscow, which caused significant damage, including an oil refinery being hit by over 1,000 drones, leading to severe energy shortages in Russia.
The latest escalation occurred as the UK announced plans to provide Ukraine with 150,000 drones and air defense systems using frozen Russian assets. This move, which includes the provision of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) and radar systems, aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities against ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine justified the recent attacks as necessary responses to Russian aggression and emphasized the need for diplomatic resolution.
The Institute for the Study of War highlighted the impact of Ukraine’s counterattacks on Russia, noting fuel restrictions and supply shortages affecting Russian military operations in Ukraine. The institute pointed out vulnerabilities in Russian air defenses and the challenges faced by the Kremlin in managing the domestic repercussions of the conflict it initiated.
