On June 22, 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, marking a significant moment in its history. The ship brought over 1,000 passengers from Jamaica to Essex to aid in the post-World War Two reconstruction efforts in Britain. These passengers, known as the Windrush Generation, are honored every year on Windrush Day for their contributions to the UK.

Recently, The Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation initiated a £2 million fundraising campaign to retrieve the ship’s anchor from the Mediterranean seabed. The ship sank in 1954 off Algeria after an engine explosion that tragically claimed the lives of four crew members. Originally a troop carrier, the vessel was on its way back from the Far East with 1,494 passengers, who were all successfully rescued in a remarkable maritime operation. However, efforts to tow the ship back to Gibraltar were unsuccessful, leaving it underwater.

Initially named the Monte Rosa and built in Germany in 1930, the ship was later seized by the British during the war and renamed HMT Empire Windrush. Despite its dark past, campaigners are striving to give the ship’s anchor a proper tribute.

Marie van der Zyl OBE, vice chair of the Windrush Memorial Anchor Foundation, emphasized the importance of understanding both the pre-Windrush and Windrush-era stories to grasp the UK’s cultural diversity. The foundation aims to raise £2 million to support the anchor recovery, conservation, memorial installation, and educational programs related to the ship’s history.

In addition to donations through a GoFundMe page, a Windrush Board Game designed to educate all ages about the Windrush Generation’s experiences and contributions is being reintroduced for Windrush Day. Plans include using a replica anchor for outreach events, exhibitions, and school engagements across the UK to honor the legacy of the Windrush Generation and their impact on British society.
