“Labour MPs Consider Rivals to Andy Burnham for PM”

Published on

Andy Burnham may encounter obstacles in his bid for the Prime Minister’s office as Labour Members of Parliament deliberate on supporting potential rivals.

There have been suggestions from some MPs for Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the PM, to consider entering the race due to concerns about Burnham ascending to the position without a challenge. However, the likelihood of Jones running seemed to diminish as a source close to him downplayed the idea.

Former defense minister Al Carns also hinted at contemplating a leadership bid. When asked about launching his own campaign, he mentioned that his decision would depend on various factors, including aligning with a particular vision and policy.

There is skepticism about whether either Jones or Carns could garner the necessary support of 81 MPs to participate in a leadership competition. Burnham reportedly enjoys the backing of a majority of Labour MPs and would emerge as a strong frontrunner should a contest arise.

Should Burnham remain uncontested, he could assume the role of Prime Minister in a matter of weeks. Nominations to replace Keir Starmer are set to open on July 9 and close on July 16, potentially paving the way for Burnham to take office the following day if no challenger emerges.

Several Cabinet Ministers have expressed opposition to a strenuous contest. Nick Thomas-Symonds, a supporter of Starmer, endorsed Burnham and advocated for a smooth transfer of power.

Emma Reynolds, the Environment Secretary, voiced her reluctance for a leadership battle, throwing her support behind Burnham and noting that he currently holds the necessary support.

On the other hand, backbencher Nadia Whittome emphasized the need to scrutinize Burnham’s ideas, highlighting the pressing issues facing the country and the importance of transparently evaluating candidates.

Labour MP John Slinger insisted on a comprehensive leadership contest, underscoring the importance of subjecting aspiring leaders to regular scrutiny.

A Member of Parliament representing a Red Wall constituency expressed reservations about Jones but emphasized the need for Burnham to maintain his position. The MP suggested that a challenger aligned with Starmer’s views could emerge in the future if circumstances change.
