Recent data has shown that the average cost of auto insurance has increased after three years of decline. According to findings by Confused.com, drivers are now paying an average of £719 annually for their vehicle insurance, marking an £8 rise over the past quarter.
Although current prices are still £38 lower than a year ago, the latest statistics indicate a potential reversal in the ongoing trend of decreasing premiums. Insurers attribute this shift to a significant 42% surge in the average value of insurance claims since 2020.
With nearly half of drivers experiencing higher renewal costs in recent months, motorists are cautioned by Confused.com to expect further price hikes when updating their policies. This insight stems from the latest car insurance price index jointly released by Confused.com and WTW, analyzing over six million insurance quotes.
While motor premiums had been decreasing since the beginning of 2023 following steep post-Covid crisis adjustments, a contrasting trend in claim costs has emerged. Despite a 59% decline in the number of claims, the average payout per claim has risen by 42% from £3,842 to £5,464 between 2020 and 2025, indicating higher expenses for insurers.
Matt Crole-Rees, a motoring expert at Confused.com, remarked on this shift, emphasizing the impact of claim costs on insurance prices. He advised drivers to proactively seek competitive rates during renewal, noting that early action, ideally 28 days before renewal, could lead to savings of up to 53% on policy costs.
