Pub landlord Frank Collins recently celebrated his 97th birthday by enjoying several pints, claiming the title of the oldest barkeeper in the country. Taking over the family business at the age of 68, Frank expressed his intention to continue serving behind the bar as long as he finds joy in it. The Dog & Partridge pub in Sowood, West Yorkshire, has been in the Collins family for generations, with Frank’s father purchasing it in 1955. Following his father’s passing in 1956, Frank’s mother Mabel stepped in to run the establishment, keeping up the tradition of strong landladies at the pub.
In 1998, Frank officially became the pub’s licensee after the police advised him to find someone to take charge. With a background in the textile industry, Frank shifted his career to manage the pub, a decision he has never regretted. Reflecting on his long history in the pub industry, Frank shared memories of assisting his father from a young age and even being left in charge at 16 while his parents went on holiday.
Acknowledging his dedication and service, the Halifax and Calderdale branch of Camra honored Frank with an award two years ago. Celebrating his recent birthday with a small gathering, Frank humorously invited guests to enjoy the first pint on him, followed by the next ten on them.
