The UK Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather alert for thunderstorms in six regions of the country. Weather experts caution that heavy rainfall and frequent lightning strikes could lead to significant disruptions on Thursday evening, from 6 pm until 11:59 pm.
While many areas may escape the worst impacts, the Met Office has highlighted the potential for intense thunderstorms to develop in certain locations following a period of hot weather. These storms pose risks of travel delays, flooding, and power outages.
Driving conditions may become hazardous due to spray, standing water, and hail, potentially causing longer journey times for motorists and bus passengers. Strong winds accompanying the storms could also cause damage to buildings and temporary structures, with lightning strikes posing a threat to properties.
The Met Office has warned of possible short-term power outages and service disruptions for homes and businesses in affected areas. They recommend seeking shelter in a secure enclosed space during the storms, advising against sheltering near trees or elevated areas prone to lightning strikes.
Thunderstorms typically form when warm air rapidly rises into the atmosphere, a phenomenon common after prolonged hot weather or during a heatwave. As the sun heats the ground, warm air ascends, cools, and condenses into water droplets, forming clouds. These conditions lead to the development of cumulonimbus clouds, capable of producing hail, thunder, and lightning.
