“Political Allies Purnell and Burnham Reunite in High-Stakes Move”

Published on

James Purnell and Andy Burnham share a long-standing political alliance that dates back many years. They both started their careers as young special advisers under Tony Blair’s government. During the ’90s, they even played on the same football team, Demon Eyes, which was organized by communications expert Tim Allan, known for his brief role in Keir Starmer’s team.

The team’s name was inspired by a campaign poster from the 1997 general election depicting Tony Blair with devilish eyes. Purnell and Burnham entered Parliament together after the 2001 general election, representing constituencies in Greater Manchester and even shared an office.

Purnell swiftly advanced in his political career, serving as a government whip, then progressing to roles as Culture Secretary and later as Work and Pensions Secretary. Burnham, a rising star, succeeded him as Culture Secretary in 2009, humorously mentioning that he was removing the “Purnellisms” from the office.

In 2009, Purnell resigned from the Cabinet, advising then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down, expressing concern that Brown’s leadership could lead to a Conservative victory. A year later, Purnell made the tough decision to leave Parliament, citing a desire to move away from frontline politics.

After a 16-year hiatus from politics, including roles at the BBC and a lobbying firm, Purnell is poised to return to frontline politics as Burnham’s chief-of-staff if Burnham becomes the next Prime Minister. The chief-of-staff position has been held by various individuals in recent years, each wielding significant power and influence but also facing criticism for government errors.

A former journalist who knows Purnell well commended Burnham’s choice, describing Purnell as calm, intelligent, and well-versed in policy matters. This selection reflects Burnham’s commitment to governmental reform, as highlighted in his recent book co-authored with Steve Rotheram.

Purnell’s reputation as a clear political thinker will be crucial in his new role, considered one of the most demanding within the government.
